Student course assignments & English Language Learners

As part of School District 21’s long-term focus on student learning and the implementation of our Professional Learning Community, all students in School District 21 are enrolled in courses that meet their needs within their instructional programs. Additionally, all students are the responsibility of all teachers on the team. Taken together, these points have resulted in School District 21 “scheduling” students from the office as an entire team that includes all students within the team who are to be enrolled in a particular course.
Students learning English – Tier A or Tier B bilingual students who speak Spanish, Polish, or Russian
A student receiving Tier A/Tier B services is enrolled in courses that allow the student to receive instruction in L1 and instruction in English language and literacy development. To ensure that evidence can be captured correctly and a report card can be generated to best describe this student’s academic progress, the student receives the following:
- L1 (Spanish, Polish, or Russian) Reading and Communications
- ESL Reading and Communications (with additional information provided within each of the domains of language – reading, writing, listening, and speaking; Considered as “ESL Power Standards” within PowerTeacher)
- End-of-Year Power Standards Summary Report (CCSD21 Power Standards are reported with regard to the student’s progress in L1. The additional ESL Power Standards for each of the domains are reported with regard to the student’s progress in L2, or English.)
Students learning English – Tier C Bilingual or ESL and Tier A/B ESL students
A student receiving Tier C (all languages) or ESL services (any tier) is enrolled in courses that allow the student to receive specific instruction in English language and literacy development, and audit coursework in the general education core section of Reading and Communications. To ensure that evidence can be captured correctly and a report card can be generated to best describe this student’s academic progress, the student receives the following:
ESL Reading and Communications
Each trimester, students will receive an academic grade and additional information provided within each of the Domains of Language – Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking. These are considered ESL Power Standards within PowerTeacher.
End-of-year Power Standards Summary Report (ESL Power Standards – Progress summary in each Domain of language.)
- Tier C and ESL students are not graded in core English Reading and Communications. They are graded by a certified Bilingual/ESL teacher who is accurately reporting on the student’s progress in acquiring English proficiency.
- While core Reading and Communications teachers can be collecting evidence of the student’s performance in the general education classroom, teachers should be collaborating with the Bilingual/ESL teacher who determines the grades for the student – both in ESL Reading and Communications and the domain-specific ESL Power Standards.
